Mermaids Cave, Sandstone cave in Blue Mountains, Australia
Mermaids Cave is a sandstone cave in the Blue Mountains that sits beneath an impressive rock overhang. The formation has distinct layering visible in the stone walls that rise steeply on either side.
The cave received its official name in 1882, marking its documented presence in New South Wales geological records. The name became established in local references and regional maps following this designation.
The location gained additional recognition when it served as a filming site for scenes in the 1985 movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
The cave is accessible via a roughly 660 meter walking path from Megalong Valley Road, with parking available at a lay-by across from the trailhead. The ground can become slippery after rain, so appropriate footwear is advisable.
During rainy periods, water cascades over the rock shelter and creates a natural curtain effect at the cave entrance. This temporary waterfall flows directly through the sandstone layers above.
