Bankstown Bunker

Bankstown Bunker is an underground military structure in Condell Park, now hidden beneath modern townhouses. Its interior featured two levels with operations rooms, plotting areas for monitoring the southwest Pacific region, escape tunnels, and communication facilities.

The facility was constructed between 1943 and 1944 as Air Defence Headquarters Sydney for the Royal Australian Air Force. It served operational functions during the war effort before closing in 1947.

The site housed Australian air force personnel who specialized in aircraft identification during their duty. These workers operated in organized shifts and lived in nearby accommodations, reflecting how intensively this place functioned during wartime.

The bunker sits beneath residential buildings and is accessible only on specific days, so check ahead before planning your visit. The underground spaces can be tight, so wear comfortable clothing and prepare for cool temperatures.

The main operations room was modeled after underground command centers from wartime England and coordinated air defense against potential attacks. This layout showed how Australia's defense strategy mirrored British practices from the conflict.
