Orient Hotel

The Orient Hotel is a three-story colonial building at 87-89 George Street featuring a curved facade and stuccoed brick walls that shape its distinctive streetfront. The interior contains a public bar, courtyard beer garden, and a dining area named Mrs Jones, all positioned on the ground floor level.

The building was established in 1844 on the site of the First Fleet Surgeon's residence and initially operated under the name Marine Hotel. It changed its name to Orient Hotel in 1885, marking a significant shift in its identity and operations over the 40-year span.

The establishment functions as a social gathering place where locals and visitors meet across its different areas within the historic district. Its public bar and beer garden spaces reflect how the venue continues to serve its original purpose as a community hub where people naturally congregate.

The venue operates daily serving food and beverages across its multiple spaces to suit different preferences. The terrace beer garden works well during nice weather and provides views out toward the cobbled streets that characterize the neighborhood.

During the 1880s smallpox outbreak in Sydney, the hotel served as a key location where local information and updates circulated among residents. Its central position made it a natural meeting point where news spread and people gathered for information.
