The building opened in 1864 as a lodging house for sailors arriving in Sydney's port and served this purpose for over a century. A major renovation and expansion in 1926 transformed its interior, and the structure later transitioned to cultural use.
The building tells the story of seafarers from around the world who found shelter here during their time in Sydney. Today, visitors can experience how maritime workers shaped this neighborhood and left their mark on the place.
