Merchant's House

Merchant's House is a five-story residence in The Rocks, Sydney, now functioning as a museum with historical exhibitions. Its rooms include a basement kitchen, dining room, drawing room, bedrooms, and servants quarters arranged in late Georgian style with a geometric timber staircase.

Robert Campbell arrived in Sydney in 1798 and developed the area with warehouses and wharves before subdividing land during the 1840s economic depression. The current building emerged as part of this early commercial development, shaped by the business activities of that era.

The building displays Greek Revival design with water leaf details, stone brackets, and heavy cornices that reflect 19th-century craftsmanship. These architectural features shape how visitors experience the interior spaces and reveal the skilled work of the period.

The site opens Wednesday through Sunday as an educational center offering programs about 19th-century life in the area. Visitors should allow time to explore all floor levels and note that the staircases are narrow and steep in places.

Between 1991 and 1994 the building underwent complete restoration, transforming from a post-World War II boarding house into a museum space. This rescue project preserved the historical details and opened the house to the public.
