Sirius building, Brutalist apartment complex in The Rocks, Sydney, Australia
The Sirius building is a residential complex made of stacked concrete forms with large windows in The Rocks. The structure spans multiple levels and provides residents with views of the harbor bridge and opera house.
The building was completed in 1980 and emerged in response to displacement in The Rocks during previous decades. It was an urban planning response to residents being moved out during the neighborhood's transformation.
The building housed residents from various income levels who chose to live in central Sydney. This role shaped the character of the place and reflects a time when public housing was part of the city center's identity.
The site is easily walkable and sits in a well-connected neighborhood with shops and restaurants nearby. The architecture offers plenty to see from outside, and you can explore the facade and surroundings without special access.
In 2019 the building was sold to private buyers and since then converted into apartments and commercial spaces for other users. This sale marked the end of its role as a public housing project in the city center.
