Pallister, Greenwich, Heritage site in Greenwich, Australia
Pallister in Greenwich is a manor house on River Road featuring a grand mahogany staircase and imported roof slates from Wales. The building was constructed in 1892 and overlooks the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers.
John St Vincent Welch designed and built this Victorian manor after arriving from Devonshire in 1876. The building went through several transformations, first becoming a school, then a children's home, and later a hospital.
The name Pallister comes from the original owner's family. The grounds served various community purposes over time while maintaining its Victorian rooms for different uses.
The property is now part of Greenwich Hospital and can be viewed from the outside. River Road provides good access and views of the surrounding river landscape.
Around 1900 an observatory was built on the grounds to house a telescope imported from England for observing a Venus transit. This scientific equipment was remarkable for a private residence of that era.
