Avonmore Terrace, Victorian terrace houses in Randwick, Australia

Avonmore Terrace is a row of nine three-story buildings along The Avenue in Randwick, with ornate facades and generous living spaces from the late 1800s. The structures combine Italianate details with solid Victorian architecture and shape the streetscape today.

The land was granted to the Church of England in 1864 for a cemetery before John Walsh purchased it in 1888 and built these residential structures. This shift from religious use to housing reflects Sydney's rapid urban development during that era.

The terrace reflects how wealthy Sydney residents of the 1800s wanted to live, with spacious reception rooms and ornate details that showed their status. These features reveal what mattered to them in their daily lives and how they displayed their success.

You can observe the Victorian Italianate architecture from public areas while respecting the privacy of current residents throughout the day. The best views of the facades come from the street, particularly in daylight.

One section of the former family residence now operates as a boutique hotel while maintaining its original architectural character. This shows how these houses have found new purposes while keeping their historical identity intact.
