Vaucluse, Administrative division in eastern Sydney, Australia
Vaucluse is a residential suburb stretching along the southern coast of Sydney Harbour, built on sandstone headlands that rise above the water. The area includes several beaches, coastal pathways, and harbourside reserves that connect different neighborhoods.
The area originally belonged to Woollahra Municipality before separating in 1895 to become an independent borough. This independence lasted until 1948, when it merged back with Woollahra.
The neighborhood features large private gardens and heritage homes that reflect different architectural styles from its early development. Properties are set back from streets behind high walls, creating a secluded, residential character.
The area connects to central Sydney by bus, with regular services running through the neighborhood. Coastal walks between beaches are accessible year-round, though tides and weather affect some pathways.
Nielsen Park here contains one of Sydney's few enclosed harbor swimming areas, protected by shark nets year-round. This combination of safe swimming and harbor views makes it unusual among coastal suburbs.
