Balmoral Beach, Sand beach in Mosman, Australia.
Balmoral Beach is a curved sandy shore in the Mosman suburb, sitting along a sheltered arm of Sydney Harbour and backed by residential streets and parkland. At the southern end there are changing rooms, showers, and equipment rental, while a row of cafes and restaurants lines the waterfront promenade.
The beach was named in the 19th century after Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the summer home of the British royal family, reflecting how British colonial naming shaped many places around Sydney. In the early 20th century, bathing facilities were built along the shore, which helped turn it into a popular day-trip spot for Sydney residents.
The Bathers' Pavilion at the southern end is a white heritage building from the 1920s that now houses a restaurant right on the sand. Many visitors stop there after swimming, which gives the whole area a relaxed, unhurried feel.
The beach is at the end of a residential street in Mosman and can be reached by public transport from central Sydney. Most facilities are at the southern end, so it makes sense to head there first and walk along the promenade from that direction.
Balmoral Beach is one of the few beaches inside Sydney Harbour that has a shark net, which makes swimming there safer than at many other harbour beaches. A small island called Rocky Point Island sits just offshore and can be reached on foot at low tide.
