Werakata National Park, Nature reserve in Cessnock, Australia.
Werakata National Park is a nature reserve covering approximately 3,337 hectares divided into three separate sections near Abermain, Kearsley, and Kitchener. The land contains mixed forest types and supports a range of native wildlife throughout its different areas.
The area underwent extensive logging throughout the 1800s until it was set aside from Cessnock State Forest and protected in 1999. This transition marked the beginning of recovery after many decades of timber extraction.
Several Indigenous groups, including the Awabakal and Wonnarua peoples, lived across this land and maintained a deep relationship with its forests and water sources. The reserve remains an important connection to these original inhabitants and their ways of living with nature.
Visitors can reach the reserve by taking Maitland Road to Old Maitland Road. The Astills picnic area provides basic facilities including tables and drinking water for day visitors.
The reserve contains Kurri Sand Swamp Woodland, a forest type found only in a few locations within the region. This specialized habitat is essential for endangered bird species such as the Swift parrot and Regent honeyeater.
