East Maitland Police Station, Heritage police station in East Maitland, Australia.
The East Maitland Police Station is a single-story brick building on John Street with two preserved chimneys and rendered exterior walls. The structure features different timber types throughout and follows Victorian Classical design with simple geometric forms.
The building was constructed between 1870 and 1871 as a police lock-up facility for holding detainees. In 1914 it was modified and repurposed as residential quarters for police officers and their families.
The building shows local craftsmanship through its use of regional materials like blue gum timber and cedar joinery that are visible in its structure. These construction methods reflect how craftspeople worked in New South Wales during the 1800s.
The building is visible from the street as it sits on a main road in a residential area and can be viewed from outside. It is best visited during the day when you can clearly see the facade details and the chimneys.
The building was added to the New South Wales Heritage Register in 1999 and is one of the oldest surviving police buildings in the region. Its transformation from a detention facility to a residence shows how historical structures found new purposes over time.
