Biriwal Bulga National Park, Nature reserve on Bulga plateau near Port Macquarie, Australia
Biriwal Bulga National Park is a protected nature reserve on the Bulga plateau covering about 6,500 hectares near Port Macquarie. The landscape includes different forest types, from drier woodlands at lower elevations to wetter forests and rainforest sections higher up.
The area was originally part of Bulga State Forest where logging took place for many years. It became a protected national park in 1999 through a regional forest agreement that changed its use from resource extraction to conservation.
The land holds deep roots for the Biripi people, whose presence shaped this place for thousands of years and left traces across several documented sites. Walking through the park, visitors can sense this long-standing connection to the landscape.
The park is best explored on foot with sturdy hiking boots, as trail conditions vary depending on recent rainfall. Before visiting, contact the National Parks office in Taree to check current conditions and get detailed maps of the walking routes.
The park provides habitat for several hundred to around a thousand koalas, making it one of the more important refuges for this vulnerable animal in the region. Seeing evidence of these marsupials in the trees is a memorable part of visiting.
