Goondiwindi Border Bridge

Goondiwindi Border Bridge, Steel road bridge in Goondiwindi, Australia

The Goondiwindi Border Bridge is a steel structure spanning the MacIntyre River and connecting Queensland with New South Wales. It consists of two steel spans roughly 37 meters long each with a roadway about 6 meters wide to carry traffic.

A wooden crossing from 1878 preceded this structure, which was built in 1914 as a more durable replacement. The steel design was chosen to handle the growing traffic needs between the two states.

The bridge links two states and shapes daily life in this border region as people cross between Queensland and New South Wales. It has become a natural gathering point where locals and visitors notice the transition between territories.

The bridge is straightforward to access and cross, whether you are driving or walking, with no particular obstacles to navigation. Its clearance of about 5 meters above the water allows normal traffic to pass underneath without difficulty.

The construction was jointly funded by Queensland and New South Wales, though Queensland bore the larger share of responsibility. This partnership between the two states was notable for a border crossing project of that era.
