Assmanshausen Winery, Heritage listed winery in Toolburra, Australia.
Assmanshausen Winery is a heritage winery and homestead in Toolburra featuring an original timber-framed building alongside a residence with detailed cedar detailing. The property sits on landscaped grounds along Serisier Road in the Southern Downs Region.
The winery was established in the 1860s by German immigrants Jacob and Elisabetha Kircher, named after a wine region on the Rhine River. The operation developed over subsequent decades into a significant wine production site in the local district.
The winery earned multiple awards and recognition throughout southern Queensland, becoming a principal wine producer in the Warwick district by 1870.
The site sits on a rural property with good road access and is straightforward to locate by its signage and surrounding grounds. Visiting allows you to walk around the buildings and grounds at your own pace during operating hours.
Jacob Kircher created a horse-drawn weeding device during the 1870s and experimented with innovative methods for moving and fermenting wine. These early improvements demonstrate how winemakers were already seeking better production methods over 150 years ago.
