Gold Coast, Coastal resort city in Queensland, Australia
Gold Coast is a coastal city in southeastern Queensland that spreads along roughly 70 kilometers of Pacific shoreline. High-rise buildings stand along the beach, with residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and theme parks set behind them amid flat to gently rolling terrain.
Small settlements appeared along the coast from the mid 19th century, as timber workers and fishermen moved into the area. The city received its official status in 1959, following rapid tourism growth in the decades before.
Surfing is part of everyday life for many residents, who catch waves early in the morning before heading to work. Along the beachfront promenade, joggers, cyclists, and families gather, using the coastal path as a shared meeting place.
The city is served by two airports: Gold Coast Airport to the south and the larger Brisbane Airport to the north. Public buses and a tram line connect the main beach areas and neighborhoods throughout the city.
A network of canals runs through parts of the city, linking residential areas directly to the open ocean. Some homes have private jetties where boats are moored the way cars are parked elsewhere.
