The institution started operating in 1929 as the first Marist Brothers school in Queensland, initiated by Archbishop James Duhig's educational development plan.
The college buildings reflect the evolution of Catholic education in Queensland, serving students from Anglo-Irish, Italian, Croatian, and Polish communities.
The monastery section transformed into teacher accommodations and meeting spaces, while the college area provided classrooms for up to 400 students.
The buildings received heritage status in 2008 and now function as the Lavalla Centre, dedicated to teacher training and youth activities.
