Australia Zoo, Wildlife conservation center at Sunshine Coast Regional, Australia
Australia Zoo is a wildlife park in Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast where kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles and tigers live across different landscape zones. The grounds are divided into several areas with viewing platforms, walkways over ponds and a large stadium for animal shows.
Bob Irwin opened a small reptile park here in 1970, which his son Steve later expanded with Terri into a large wildlife center with international reach. After Steve died in 2006, the family took over management and added new enclosures and research facilities to the site.
The name honors Steve Irwin, whose enthusiasm for animals still shapes the way staff present wildlife shows today. Many keepers share stories about working with crocodiles and snakes as they guide visitors through the enclosures.
The entrances sit close to the parking area, from where paths lead to all sections. Visitors who walk with difficulty can use the paved main routes, which run flat and offer shade.
Part of the admission fee goes toward protection projects for endangered species on several continents, from tigers in Asia to wombats in Australia. The park also runs its own animal hospital, which treats injured wildlife from the surrounding area and releases them back into the wild.
