Winton is a town and administrative division in central western Queensland covering around 53,800 square kilometers. The region includes settlements such as Corfield, Middleton, and Opalton scattered across the inland landscape.
Robert Allen, a postmaster from Dorset in England, founded Winton in 1876 near Pelican Waterholes. The settlement was later moved to its present location where it developed into a regional center.
The Koa, Maiawali, and Karuwali peoples have deep connections to this region, visible in Bladensburg National Park and the surrounding lands. The landscape and water sources continue to hold meaning shaped by these original ties.
The region relies mainly on beef cattle raising, supplemented by opal mining and oil and gas extraction activities. Visitors should prepare for inland dry conditions and check local road access beforehand.
Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited, later known as Qantas Airways, was established in Winton in 1920. These origins reveal how a small regional town gave birth to one of the world's major airlines.
