Mellors Drapery and Haberdashery, Heritage shop in Gayndah, Australia
Mellors Drapery and Haberdashery is a single-story concrete building with a symmetrical rectangular layout and large display windows at 28 Capper Street. The shop sells fabrics, notions, and textiles from different categories for everyday and special occasions.
The building was completed in 1922 and replaced an earlier store destroyed in major fires on Gayndah's main street in 1921. The new structure was part of the town's rebuilding after this disaster.
The shop reflects how people shopped in the 1920s, with separate sections for men's and women's merchandise that show the shopping habits of that time. Visitors can still see these original layouts when they walk through the store today.
The shop is active and listed as a heritage site in Gayndah, easily visited in the town center on foot. Visitors can view the display windows from outside or step inside to see the original retail layout and items being sold.
Inside the shop is a unique money transport system known as a flying fox, made of metal and timber. This mechanical device moved cash between different service areas along taut wires.
