Boolboonda Tunnel, Railway tunnel in Queensland, Australia
Boolboonda Tunnel is a railway passage carved through solid granite rock, stretching approximately 192 meters to connect a former rail line between North Bundaberg and Mount Perry. The structure was constructed without internal support beams, demonstrating engineering skill from that era.
Construction occurred between 1881 and 1884 to transport copper ore from Mount Perry mines toward Bundaberg port. The project reflected the expanding mining industry in the region during that time.
The tunnel represents a significant achievement in Australian railway engineering as the first Queensland tunnel that required no internal support structure.
Visitors can reach the tunnel on foot, bicycle, or by vehicle using Tunnel Road, with signs pointing the way from Gin Gin. The terrain is relatively flat and the entrance is straightforward to locate.
Hundreds of bentwing bats have made this passage their home and roost within its depths. Visitors may encounter these mammals while walking through the tunnel.
