Cape Palmerston National Park

Cape Palmerston National Park is a protected coastal area in Queensland featuring sandy beaches, tidal estuaries, and dense mangrove forests spread across low-lying terrain. The landscape includes vegetated dunes and salt marshes shaped by natural water movements and seasonal variations.

The area was declared a protected reserve in 1976 to safeguard the coastal landscapes and ecosystems. Management efforts expanded significantly in 1994 when additional conservation measures were introduced.

Indigenous Australian communities maintain strong connections to the lands within Cape Palmerston National Park through their traditions passed down through generations.

The park has minimal facilities, so visitors should bring their own water, food, and camping gear for any extended stay. Access is best arranged with a vehicle, as public transport to the area is limited or unavailable.

The area serves as a nesting site for several seabird species that gather here in large numbers. These bird colonies are a defining feature and profoundly shape the character of the place.
