Ouernana, Mountain summit in Grande Terre, New Caledonia.
Ouernana is a mountain summit in the central range of Grande Terre, located approximately 535 meters above sea level. The peak sits within a landscape that transitions from coastal lowlands to forested interior regions of the island.
The mountain formed roughly 85 to 130 million years ago during a major geological separation of the region from larger landmasses. This ancient origin shaped the unique composition and structure of the highland landscape visible today.
The mountain region surrounding this peak was historically a key connection point between different Kanak communities across Grande Terre. You can still see traces of old paths that show how people have moved through these highlands for generations.
Expect wet conditions and tropical rainfall throughout the year, with heaviest precipitation during the rainy season. Bring waterproof gear, sturdy footwear, and supplies before heading to the summit.
The soil composition here supports rare plant species adapted to high mineral concentrations in the ground. Careful observers on the slopes can spot these specialized plants found nowhere else on the island.
