East Molokai Volcano

East Molokai Volcano is a shield volcano that spans across the landscape with its highest point, Kamakou Peak, dominating the region. The formation includes mountain ridges, deep valleys, and coastal areas shaped by its volcanic past.

The volcano began forming about two million years ago and finished its active phase about one and a half million years ago. Its most recent volcanic activity occurred on the Kalaupapa Peninsula.

The mountain holds deep meaning for Native Hawaiians, who recognize different sections as sacred areas connected to their ancestral lands and spiritual practices.

Some areas require special permission to enter, particularly in Kalawao County where regulations are strict. Check local guidelines before planning your visit, as access may be limited to organized tours.

The north side of the volcano features cliffs over 900 meters high created by a massive landslide. This ancient event was powerful enough to generate a wave that traveled across the ocean from Hawaii to California.
