Leilani Estates, Residential area in Hawaii County, United States.
Leilani Estates is a residential community located on the eastern side of Hawaii Island, situated on volcanic terrain near forest reserves. The settlement is laid out with paved roads connecting homes and local services throughout the area.
The community was established in 1964 as a residential subdivision on Hawaii Island. In 2018, a major eruption at Kilauea volcano created volcanic fissures across the area, permanently altering the landscape.
The population of 1,139 residents represents a diverse mix of ethnicities, including White, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
The area is located about 25 kilometers south of Hilo and just a few kilometers from the town of Pahoa, making shops and services reasonably accessible. Roads are paved throughout most of the community, though volcanic terrain means some areas may be uneven or rough in places.
The community sits directly above the East Rift Zone of Kilauea volcano, making it one of the most geologically active residential areas in the world. Residents here live with the ongoing reality of living atop one of Earth's most active volcanic systems.
