Waipio Valley, Sacred beach in Hawaiʻi County, US

Waipio Valley is a wide coastal valley in Hawaiʻi with steep green cliffs on both sides and a long black sand beach meeting the ocean. The valley extends far inland and is crossed by streams and waterfalls that flow down from the mountains.

The valley was once the center of Hawaiian life and home to island rulers and their courts. A massive tsunami in 1946 transformed the landscape and caused most residents to leave, changing the valley forever.

The valley holds deep meaning for Hawaiian people as a place where their ancestors lived and worked the land for centuries. Visitors walking through it can sense this connection to the past through the taro patches and the way the landscape is still shaped by traditional practices.

The valley is only partly accessible to visitors since most roads are restricted to residents and authorized tour operators. The best way to see the valley is from the viewpoint at the clifftop overlooking the entire area.

The valley is known for its exceptionally tall waterfalls, with Hi'ilawe Falls being among the highest on the island. During rainy seasons, dozens of waterfalls cascade down the cliff walls at the same time.
