Waipio Valley, Sacred beach in Hawaiʻi County, US
The mile-long black sand beach stretches between steep green cliffs and meets the Pacific Ocean at the northern end of the valley point.
The valley served as residence for Hawaiian rulers until 1946, when a massive tsunami transformed the area from a populated settlement into wilderness.
Local farmers continue the traditional cultivation of taro in patches throughout the valley floor, maintaining agricultural practices that span many generations.
The Waipiʻo Valley Road remains restricted to residents and authorized tour operators, with visitor access limited to guided excursions and the main lookout point.
The Wailoa Stream divides the beach into two sections while Hi'ilawe Falls, dropping 1,200 feet, creates the highest waterfall on the island.
