Ekven

Ekven is an ancient cemetery with over 100 graves constructed from wood, stone, and whale bones belonging to the Old Bering Sea culture. The site sits near Uelen and holds archaeological remains spanning 2,000 years.

Researchers discovered the site in the mid-20th century and found graves using Old Bering Sea culture techniques. The findings show early cultural exchange between Siberia and regions across the Bering Strait.

The graves show that shamans held important positions in the community, as seen in the elaborate burial gifts placed with them. These findings reveal a complex spiritual life expressed through masks, tools, and ornaments.

The site sits in a remote area and requires permission from local authorities to visit. Travelers should prepare for harsh weather conditions and difficult accessibility.

One of the more remarkable discoveries was an older woman buried with a wooden mask, pointing to deep spiritual practices. Such objects are rarely documented in archaeological literature and show the importance of certain individuals in this early society.
