Eklutna Lake

Eklutna Lake, reservoir in Alaska

Eklutna Lake is a large body of water in the Chugach Mountains near Anchorage, Alaska, known for its clear turquoise water fed by glaciers. The lake is surrounded by steep forested slopes and snow-capped peaks, creating a quiet mountain landscape.

Alaska Native communities have used the area around Eklutna Lake for generations, relying on the land and water for food and travel. Today the lake functions as a reservoir, storing water that supports the local region and provides hydroelectric power to Anchorage and nearby communities.

The name Eklutna comes from the Dena'ina language of Alaska Native peoples who have lived in this region for generations. The lake and surrounding mountains hold cultural meaning for them, connected to their stories and traditions about the land and water.

The lake sits less than one hour by car from Anchorage via the Glenn Highway and Eklutna Lake Road, with parking available at the lakeshore. Bring plenty of water and supplies, as there are no shops at the lake, and dress in layers since mountain weather changes quickly.

The Serenity Falls Hut at the back of the lake is one of Alaska's largest mountain huts, featuring wide windows overlooking waterfalls cascading from above. It is accessible by an easy hike or bike ride, offering the feeling of being high in the mountains while remaining within reach for day visitors.
