Blueberry Hill

Blueberry Hill sits above Valdez Bay and is covered with dense forests of Sitka spruce, especially on its western slopes. The terrain offers a moderate hiking trail with steady climbs and requires good footwear and plenty of water.

The hills around Valdez were home to seasonal workers in the 1980s and 1990s, who gave the neighboring Hippie Hill its name. This period shaped the local history of the entire area.

Local people come here to pick wild blueberries in the summer months, making this location important for seasonal gathering and the rhythms of the year.

Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water since the path climbs steadily. Knowledge of wildlife safety is important to make the experience safe.

This location holds one of the northernmost groves of Sitka spruce within the Pacific temperate rain forest system. Hikers often do not notice how unusual it is to find such old forests at this elevation.
