World Ice Art Championships, Ice sculpture competition in Fairbanks, United States
The World Ice Art Championships is an international competition where professional sculptors carve large ice blocks into intricate artworks over several weeks. Different competition categories exist based on how many blocks each team uses for their design.
The competition started in 1991 as a small regional event and has grown into an international gathering attracting sculptors from approximately 30 countries. This growth transformed Fairbanks into a major destination for ice art worldwide.
The competition reflects Alaska's deep connection with ice as a material and how artists from around the world transform a harsh resource into temporary art. Visitors watch sculptors work with techniques passed down through generations of northern craftspeople.
The competition takes place at the Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds where you can walk among the sculptors as they work. Dress warmly in layers since winter temperatures in Fairbanks are well below freezing.
A dedicated kids area made entirely of ice features slides, a maze, and a skating rink for families to explore and play. This zone demonstrates how ice serves as both an artistic material and a space for shared recreation.
