Guadalajara-M. Hidalgo y Costilla, International airport in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga Municipality, Mexico.
Guadalajara-M. Hidalgo y Costilla is an international commercial airport in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga Municipality, Mexico. The facility operates with two runways and a terminal that handles both domestic and intercontinental connections.
The airport opened on March 1, 1951, under President Miguel Alemán Valdés, replacing an older, smaller facility. Infrastructure expanded over the following decades to accommodate growing passenger numbers.
The airport takes its name from Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest who began the uprising against Spanish colonial forces. The naming honors the start of the independence movement that shaped modern Mexico.
The terminal sits roughly 17 kilometers south of Guadalajara city center and is accessible by road. Due to the elevation, the air can feel thinner, so allow time for adjustment if you are not accustomed to higher ground.
The location at roughly 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level makes this one of the higher elevation airports in North America. On clear days, the approach from the air offers wide views of the surrounding plateau and distant mountain ranges.
