Angelus Temple, Pentecostal church in Echo Park, Los Angeles, US
Angelus Temple is a church building in Echo Park, Los Angeles, that features a large concrete dome. Two balconies run along the interior walls and provide seating for several thousand visitors during services.
Aimee Semple McPherson founded this place in 1923 as one of the first very large churches in the United States. The design allowed a new kind of service with radio broadcasts and large gatherings at that time.
The name derives from a prayer recited in many Christian traditions. Visitors often hear singing and see congregation members gathering in the foyer before and after meetings.
Services take place on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, and visitors are welcome. The doors usually open about half an hour before the start to ease entry.
The dome was built without supporting columns inside, which was unusual at the time. Stained glass windows by George Haskins decorate the walls and cast colorful light into the space.
