Carroll Avenue, Historic residential street in Angelino Heights, Los Angeles, United States.
Carroll Avenue is a historic residential street in the Angelino Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles County, United States. The 1300 block preserves several wooden houses with decorated porches, gables, and bay windows typical of Eastlake and Queen Anne architecture from the 1880s.
The houses were built in the 1880s as part of an early residential neighborhood outside downtown Los Angeles. The street was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for preserving the city's largest group of Victorian-era residences.
These homes from the 1880s reflect a residential style that was rare in Los Angeles at the time and now survives as a unified ensemble. Residents often maintain the facades and gardens in original colors and forms, allowing visitors to experience the streetscape of another era.
Walking tours offer the best way to view the facades and architectural details of each building. The street sits on a hill, so comfortable shoes are recommended for walking on sloped pavement.
In the 1980s the street became California's first underground wiring district, removing poles and overhead lines. This move helps maintain the historical appearance without visible modern infrastructure cluttering the view.
