Fort Moore

Fort Moore is a monument in downtown Los Angeles featuring a large terra cotta relief showing soldiers raising the American flag. A waterfall cascades from above, creating a dramatic backdrop for the historic panels and inscriptions.

The site marks where Fort Moore once stood during the Mexican-American War as a military outpost. It was named after Captain Benjamin D. Moore, an officer who died during the capture of Los Angeles.

The memorial displays scenes showing how different groups shaped Los Angeles through farming, transportation, and settlement. These images tell the story of the people who built the city over time.

The site is located on North Hill Street in downtown and is easy to find on foot. The waterfall runs throughout the day, looking particularly striking when sunlight hits the water and terra cotta tiles.

Hidden inside the flagpole is a time capsule from 1958 containing historical documents and photographs from that era. This buried layer of history sits beneath the visible surface of the memorial.
