Al's Bar, Underground music venue in Downtown Los Angeles, United States
Al's Bar was an underground music venue located in the American Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, housed in a compact space with a low stage. The performance area held around 30 people and occupied the same building that contained 47 residential apartments.
Marc Kreisel and partners acquired the American Hotel in 1979 and established this venue as a central gathering place for Los Angeles artists. The bar remained open until 2001, maintaining its original building structure throughout its years of operation.
The venue hosted weekly No Talent Nights where poets, musicians, and magicians performed experimental work. Theater productions and art exhibitions were regular events in this intimate underground setting.
The compact space meant visitors needed to arrive early for better seating and should expect crowded conditions during events. The low ceiling and sparse setup created an intimate but tight environment for performances.
The bar displayed a neon sign reading 'Tip or Die', a direct message to patrons about gratuities. It became known for hosting early performances by major bands including Nirvana, Beck, Sonic Youth, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
