Kearny Mesa, Commercial district in San Diego, US.
Kearny Mesa is a neighborhood in central San Diego that extends between State Route 52, Interstate 805, Aero Drive, and Interstate 15, encompassing both residential and commercial zones. The area hosts the Convoy District with Asian shops and restaurants as well as Montgomery Field, an airport for small aircraft operations.
The area originated from Camp Kearny, a military base established in 1917 that operated until 1946 before transforming into Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Since 1955, aerospace and manufacturing operations shaped the region after General Dynamics established its presence there.
The Convoy District was designated as a Pan Asian Cultural District in 2020 and features numerous Asian markets, restaurants, and businesses that emerged since the 1970s. The shops and eateries shape the streetscape and reflect the diverse makeup of the community.
The neighborhood is served by multiple highways that connect easily to downtown San Diego and other parts of the city. These major roads make navigation straightforward and allow quick access to surrounding areas.
Montgomery Field, one of the oldest privately operated airports in the country, sits in the middle of the neighborhood and has served small aircraft operations for decades. This rare mix of urban development and aviation operations makes the area unusual for the region.
