Coronado Islands, Four rocky islands off Baja California, Mexico.

The Coronado Islands are a group of four rocky landforms off the coast of Baja California, consisting of North Coronado, Middle Rock, Central Coronado, and South Coronado. They rise from the Pacific Ocean approximately 13 kilometers from the mainland shore.

European explorers first recorded the islands in 1542. By 1602, Father Antonio de la Ascención named them after four religious martyrs.

The Kumeyaay people settled here temporarily and held spiritual ceremonies, leaving behind shell middens visible along the shores. Their presence shaped how the islands were used for generations.

Access to the islands requires official Mexican government permission, which is rarely granted to general visitors. Only military personnel, lighthouse staff, and researchers typically have landing permission.

South Coronado Island hosts Puerto Cueva Cove and shelters the largest known population of Scripps's murrelets in their natural environment. These rare seabirds draw ornithologists and wildlife experts from around the world.
