Aliso Viejo is a planned community in Orange County, California that spreads across the San Joaquin Hills and connects residential zones with shopping centers and parks. The layout follows a designed street network with walking trails, green corridors and centrally located commercial areas.
The Mission Viejo Company purchased portions of the Moulton Ranch in 1976 to develop a new planned community in southern Orange County. Residents voted to incorporate as a city in 2001 with approval from more than 93 percent of voters.
The Soka University Performing Arts Center has hosted public performances and exhibitions since opening in 2001 on its hillside campus. Visitors can walk through the grounds and see contemporary architecture surrounded by landscaped gardens.
The Aliso Viejo Community Association manages recreation programs, green spaces and public areas throughout the community. Visitors find walking trails and parks distributed across the town, especially in the hillside zones with views over the surrounding area.
The transformation from open ranchland to a fully functioning city happened in less than three decades. Incorporation came only after several years of planning and community meetings where residents debated local governance structures.
