Laguna Woods Village, Age-restricted community in Laguna Woods, California, US.
Laguna Woods Village is an age-restricted residential community in Laguna Woods, Southern California, made up of several thousand homes and apartments spread across a large gated property. The grounds include multiple clubhouses, two golf courses, several swimming pools, and an internal bus system that connects the different sections of the development.
The site was developed in the 1960s as Laguna Hills Leisure World, one of the first large-scale retirement communities built in the United States. It was renamed Laguna Woods Village when the surrounding area was incorporated as the city of Laguna Woods in 1999.
Laguna Woods Village has over 200 resident-run clubs covering interests from ceramics to foreign languages, making it unusually self-organized for a residential community. The on-site theater hosts shows put together by the residents themselves, giving daily life here a distinctly community-driven character.
Because this is a gated community reserved for residents aged 55 and over, general visitors cannot simply walk in or tour the grounds. Anyone considering a move here should contact the main office directly to learn about eligibility requirements and next steps.
The community has its own equestrian center where residents can keep horses and take riding lessons, which is unusual for an urban retirement setting. There are also dedicated RV parking areas on the property, so residents can go on long trips without losing their place in the community.
