Tustin, Historical city in Orange County, United States
Tustin is a city in inland Orange County, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area in southern California. The community spans about 29 square kilometers (11.1 square miles) with residential streets and commercial areas among older and newer developments.
Columbus Tustin, a carriage maker, purchased about 526 hectares from the former Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana in 1868 and founded a settlement here. The community grew around farming and gained a naval air station with huge airship hangars during World War II.
The name comes from a northern California carriage maker who purchased land here in the late 19th century. Visitors today see a city with wide streets and residential areas lined with sycamores and oaks.
The Market Place is a large shopping center with stores, restaurants, and cinemas in the northern part of the city. Visitors find free parking there and can easily walk between different sections.
Two wooden airship hangars from World War II stand south of downtown and rank among the largest timber structures ever built in North America. Each measures over 300 meters (more than 1,000 feet) in length and still looks imposing next to modern buildings.
