Yost Theater, Historic movie theater in Downtown Santa Ana, United States
The Yost Theater is a neoclassical music venue and former movie theater on North Spurgeon Street in downtown Santa Ana, California, with an ornate facade and a large main hall. The hall holds around 1,000 people and is used today for concerts, live performances, and special events.
The building opened in 1913 as the Auditorium Theater and was first used for silent films before shifting to Mexican cinema. It later passed to owner Ed Yost, who gave it its current name, and was restored to use as a performance venue in 2007.
The Yost Theater sits in the heart of Santa Ana, a city with a strong Mexican-American community, and that connection shapes who comes through the doors. Audiences at events here often have a personal tie to the building and its past as a gathering place for Spanish-language performances.
The venue is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets in downtown Santa Ana. It is best to book tickets in advance online and check the event calendar before visiting, as the space is only open on event nights.
During the years it served as a church, the interior was substantially modified, and much of that work was undone when the building was brought back to use as a venue. The Yost is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means its original neoclassical features are formally protected.
