Motte Rimrock Reserve, Ecological reserve in Riverside County, United States.
Motte Rimrock Reserve is an ecological preserve spanning 736 acres on a broad rocky plateau at the western edge of Perris Valley. The landscape consists of grasslands and coastal sage scrub habitat.
The land was donated to the University of California by Charles and Ottie Motte in 1976. This gift created a protected area for scientific research and conservation work.
Archaeological sites show traces of Cahuilla and Luiseño settlements. Visitors can observe how these communities lived within this landscape.
The reserve requires advance registration for entry since ongoing research projects take place on the grounds. Visitors should contact the administration before entering to ensure proper access.
The reserve sits between the Pacific Ocean and Mojave Desert, creating a rare habitat. It shelters endangered species like the Stephens' kangaroo rat and California gnatcatcher that thrive in this transitional zone.
