Julian, Historical mining town in San Diego County, United States.
Julian is a former mining settlement in San Diego County that rests among pine forests in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The settlement is shaped by wooden facades and several brick buildings from the late 19th century.
The settlement arose in 1869 when Drury Bailey and his brothers, along with their Julian cousins, made their homes here. A few months later, the discovery of gold triggered a short mining boom.
The Julian Pioneer Museum preserves mining equipment and photographs from the town's founding era. Main Street is lined with storefronts and small shops that sell regional products and handmade goods.
You reach the settlement via State Routes 78 and 79 through winding mountain roads. Several small guesthouses are found on side streets, while restaurants and cafes concentrate along Main Street.
The settlement received International Dark Sky Community status in 2021 due to its efforts to reduce light pollution. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way and numerous constellations without a telescope.
