Fountain Valley is a city in Orange County in southern California, nestled between larger neighboring communities on level ground and made up mostly of residential districts with single-family homes and low-rise buildings. Mile Square Regional Park occupies a large central area, offering sports facilities, lakes, and wide lawns.
The city grew out of the former Rancho Las Bolsas, which was parceled after 1872 and originally inhabited by the Tongva people. In the decades following World War II, farmland quickly transformed into residential areas.
James Kanno made history as one of the first Japanese-American mayors in mainland United States when he became Fountain Valley's inaugural mayor.
The San Diego Freeway runs through the city and provides quick connections to other parts of Orange County. Orange County Transportation Authority buses operate on main roads, linking residential neighborhoods with shopping and business zones.
The city took its name from the many artesian wells that once emerged due to the high water table and supplied farms with water. Today, only a few of these old sources remain visible.
