Temecula, Wine region city in Riverside County, California, United States
Temecula is a city in Riverside County, California, situated in the valley between Los Angeles and San Diego, with a Mediterranean climate and suburban residential areas. The surrounding landscape spreads across rolling hills where vineyards, ranch properties, and retail centers line the main roads.
The name comes from the Luiseño word Temeekunga and was first documented by Europeans in 1797. A trading post emerged in the early 1800s, but the area only grew into its current form in the 1960s with freeway construction and family settlement.
The Pechanga Band of Luiseño keeps their connection to the land alive through a resort, casino, and educational programs. Visitors can find handmade jewelry and traditional weavings by local artisans at the nearby reservation.
Old Town hosts a farmers market on Saturday mornings with local produce and handmade goods. Wineries along Rancho California Road open most days for tastings, many accessible without advance reservation.
About 50 wineries operate in the valley, growing Mediterranean grape varieties in an officially designated wine region. Some cellars sit in converted barns or ranches where tastings happen among old olive trees and citrus groves.
