Sunnylands

Sunnylands is an estate in Rancho Mirage, California, known for its midcentury modern architecture and extensive gardens. The main house features large glass panels and a distinctive pink roof, surrounded by manicured lawns and artificial lakes that spread across the property.

The estate was completed in 1966 and served as a private retreat for the Annenberg family, who worked in the publishing industry. Over the following decades it became a site for high-level political talks and international summit meetings.

The name comes from Walter Annenberg, who called the property this because he valued the cheerful desert setting and clear skies. Visitors today can walk through the public areas and see how the estate continues to serve as a meeting place for diplomats and as a space for art exhibitions.

The visitor center offers guided tours of the historic house, while outdoor areas and gardens are accessible to everyone. Reservations for house tours are recommended because space is limited and tours run only at set times.

The property has a nine-hole golf course that was originally laid out for the family and their guests. The thirteen artificial lakes scattered across the estate attract migratory birds and create an unusual wetland in the middle of the desert.
