Claremont Colleges, Educational consortium in Claremont, United States
Claremont Colleges is a consortium of seven independent institutions in California located on shared grounds spanning more than 540 acres (220 hectares). Each institution operates its own academic programs and employs separate personnel, while central services like libraries and health care are used by all.
The first college in the group began in 1887 as Pomona College, while the idea of a shared model came later. The remaining six institutions were founded between 1925 and 1997, expanding the original concept.
Students enjoy the freedom to take courses across multiple colleges while each institution runs its own dormitories and dining halls. Learners use the shared sports facilities, event spaces, and open lawns between the different campuses.
Visitors can explore public areas like courtyards and gardens between buildings, but should note that certain facilities are accessible only to enrolled students. The campuses sit close together, so walking between them is straightforward.
The institutions share a central library holding more than 3 million volumes, even though each college also maintains its own smaller collection. Students can attend classes at three or four different locations in one week without leaving the town area.
