Susanna Bixby Bryant founded the garden in 1927 on 200 acres of her Santa Ana Canyon ranch in Orange County, naming it Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in memory of her father, John W. Bixby. A 1943 fire and 1944 storms destroyed about 5,300 plants, and after Bryant died in 1946 Philip Munz led the 1951 move to Claremont. It was renamed California Botanic Garden in 2020.
