Pitzer College, Liberal arts college in Claremont, United States.
Pitzer College is a liberal arts institution within the Claremont Colleges system in southern California. The campus consists of teaching facilities, dormitories and common areas spread across tree-lined grounds where students from different disciplines meet and study together.
The institution opened in 1963 as a school for women and began admitting male students in 1970. It joined the group of neighboring colleges in Claremont soon after its establishment, allowing students to take classes at any of the partner institutions.
The institution takes its name from Russell K. Pitzer, a California philanthropist who supported its founding. Students organize themselves through councils and committees that make decisions about campus life and academic policies together with faculty members.
Visitors can walk through the open campus grounds during daylight hours and observe the layout of academic buildings connected by pathways and courtyards. Most activity happens during weekdays when classes are in session and students move between buildings throughout the morning and afternoon.
The campus features outdoor murals and art installations created by students and visiting artists that change and evolve over time. Some buildings display works that reflect social movements and themes explored in coursework, turning walls into open galleries for anyone walking through.
