Phoenix Raceway is a motorsport track in Avondale that follows a tri-oval layout measuring one mile around, with banked turns and a bend in the back straight. The venue offers seating for tens of thousands, along with suites, camping zones, and a hilltop viewing area called Monument Hill.
The track opened in 1964 to bring major racing to the western United States, starting with open-wheel events. A major rebuild finished in 2018 reshaped the facility and secured its place as the host of the championship finale from 2020 onward.
The track was renamed Jeff Gordon Raceway for the 2015 Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, honouring the driver in his last full NASCAR season. In 1988 Alan Kulwicki won the first Cup Series race at Phoenix and took his victory lap in the opposite direction, a celebration known as the Polish Victory Lap. Rattlesnake Hill, the grassy general-admission area outside turns one and two, recalls officials clearing rattlesnakes and scorpions before races.
The track sits on the southwest edge of the metro area, accessible by car with large parking lots available. During race weekends, arrive early to avoid congestion on the approach roads and allow time to find your seating section.
Monument Hill, along turns 3 and 4, is topped by the Gila and Salt River Meridian, a reference building of the United States Geological Survey listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Long before the track existed, this spot served as the original land-survey point for what became Arizona.
